How to show products in same category on the PROD screen - 2005/11/10 19:32 Is there a way to show thumbnail images of the other products in the same category on the PROD screen? I did this in effect by putting all the products in the same category into the related products list. I was able to show these images across the bottom. But now I find that I need a second group of related products.

Ideally I want to:
-show the current product in a large format (PROD screen) at the top.
-show thumbnails of all the other products in the same category across the bottom.
- then show thumbnails of the related products in a column to the right

Re: How to show products in same category on the PROD screen - 2005/11/11 00:02 Well I have made several attempts in my demo store at getting something setup this way. Even with all of the new functionality we have in Merchant 5 the bottom line is that we just can't split up the related products in such a way. And there is no other data to work from.

Unfortunately after digging through all of the modules available for Merchant 5 the only thing I can come up with is to include the related products in the description and use the Related Product List Display for your "other products in this category" section. That is if you will be using the "other products in this category" section more often than the related products. Otherwise reverse it. No reason to make more work for youself.

And of course if I find a better way to do it or can talk one of the developers out there into creating it I will be sure to come back and post a solution.

Re: How to show products in same category on the PROD screen - 2005/11/11 09:22 I did find another manual way to get a second group of related products onto the PROD screen. I used the Product Footer in each detail product description to manually enter related products and links to them as html code. Then, on the PROD page layout I moved the product footer from the bottom to the side by rearranging the table structure.

The PROD layout changes set up the desired effect with the footer to the side. But the contents have to be manually maintained as HTML code in the footer for each product.

I wonder if the "upsell" item could be added to the PROD page and used to create a more automatic related list? I will look at that next

So is there any way to get the list of products in the same category and display those on the PROD screen?

All I can find is the category tree item. I don't want a whole category tree, just individual item codes for a particular category that I will specify.

I would think that at a deeper level the individual data elemets in the category tree could be extracted with some sort of "for each item in category_tree.." construct. That seems to be the way the related items work. I just don't have the information about the internals of some of these data objects and how they are assembled.
