I did find another manual way to get a second group of related products onto the PROD screen. I used the Product Footer in each detail product description to manually enter related products and links to them as html code. Then, on the PROD page layout I moved the product footer from the bottom to the side by rearranging the table structure.
The PROD layout changes set up the desired effect with the footer to the side. But the contents have to be manually maintained as HTML code in the footer for each product.
I wonder if the "upsell" item could be added to the PROD page and used to create a more automatic related list? I will look at that next
