Effective June 30th, 2005 all merchants must comply with the new Visa and MasterCard standards and PCI compliance. In addition merchants doing 20,000 transactions per year or more must show proof and have and onsite security accessment done of their brick and mortar site. Merchants not tested and certified to be compliant with the PCI standard risk fines and loss of the ability to accept credit card payments.

| The requirements for merchants under 20,000 can be imposed by the aquiring bank at any time and often they do. Visa/MC are also working towards requiring all merchants to be PCI compliant but the due date is still "to be determined". |
